Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Discount Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince is a simple, straightforward game that provides several hours of fun and as a potential to provide even longer lasting (if somewhat frustrating) fun.

First of all, the film's plot is propelled by cut scenes that are connected by the game's play (as usual). The game play usually as little to do with the book/film's plot. Bear in mind, however, this is a GAME and the idea of using the plot is something that EA has never done and thus if you are getting into the games now...be prepared. If you have played the others, you know what's up.

Now, a huge pro that EA has kept from previous titles is using the right analog stick like a wand. That is...move it in certain directions to create spells. This is great fun and better than the simple button pressing of the past. Quidditch makes a re-appearance, and while it will provide good gameplay, the fact that the broom is not free-roam (basically your on an invisible "track") is dissapointing. Recall in the Prisoner of Azkaban game where you could fly EVERYWHERE? Not here.

A new addition is potion making. Potion making can provide a challenge that is absent from most of the game's simple interface. Here you mix ingredients, heat up/stir the cauldron and earn marks based on how well you've done. Good addition EA.

Dueling is something that is fantastic yet it could have been more rewarding. The action is entertaining but few of your foes will provide much of a challange. Dueling contains different spells than those you can use outside of dueling.

A huge proponent of the game is the environment. There is tons of stuff to interact with and you can really explore all of Hogwarts. The game provides a goal of collecting 150 Hogwarts Crests. You recieve rewards as you collect them. On ENDLESS DAY (EA kept a good idea!) you can return to explore more of Hogwarts and do some unfinished bussiness (aka getting all the crests).

The game is beautiful which is a huge improvement over games in the past. Even 2007's OOTP was a step-down from what your getting here. Well let's sum this stuff up real quick:

PROs:

*Potion-making is fun
*Quidditch returns
*More puzzle style exploring (like SS, COS & POA)
*Endless Day
*Graphics
*Dueling

CONs:

*Usually a less than challenging game experience
*Lack of broomstick control
*Main plot is relativly short

Alright, so let's explore the cons for a moment. If you are a gamer that dislikes easy games and rather be frustrated (some games I can dig this quality in) than this might not be for you (if parents are reading this let me tell you that anyone 12 and under will love the gameplay). Being unable to land on the tops of towers with your broomstick is like...what?
Also, playing through the main game can take between 5-7 hours (I remember playing the first game in five hours so it's no big deal with the Harry Potter franchise).

In conclusion, the game offers plenty of fun and enjoyable Potterdom antics. On the downside EA seems to enjoy shaving off enjoyable aspects of game's previous. So if you love the games and are an avid fan, this is an easy purchase. If your a casual gamer, go ahead and rent. If your a parent looking for a simple but fun game for their kid...what are you waiting for?

The Story
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the Video Game, Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information.

Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different, but equally unavoidable adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane’s chocolates. And then there’s Hermione, simmering with jealously, but determined not to show her feelings. Yet as romance blossoms throughout Hogwarts, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.
